Publication New literacies: Using anime to expand teachers’ resources in the classroom(2020-04-22) Colón Norat, Juan Arturo; Román Pérez, Rosa I.; College of Arts and Sciences - Art; Irizarry Rodríguez, José M.; Romaguera Casablanca, José M.; Ferrer López, José R.; Department of English; Parés Matos, Elsie I.A continually changing environment of technology and communication in the modern workforce has established a new baseline for 21st-century students who require ESL educators to involve visual resources in their curriculum design for freshman composition courses. Works of popular culture promote student engagement through dissemination as part of their external literacy expertise. Secondary data on popular culture, engagement, and multimodality has been reviewed to develop a document that evaluates Anime and its benefits when integrated into higher education freshman writing classes. It is argued that Anime is constructive towards educators’ goals to draw interest from students towards skill acquisition and engagement on global issues. This thesis informs educators on how the inclusion of Anime as a resource would be successful towards engaging students with classroom content and developing skills on vocabulary, reading comprehension, fluency, and domain knowledge.
