Publication Remediation of explosives-containing water using advanced oxidation and sorption processes(2009) Hernández-Ramos, Víctor; Hwang, Sangchul; College of Engineering; Padilla Cestero, Ingrid Y.; Rivera Santos, Jorge; Department of Civil Engineering; Canals, MiguelThe main objective of this work is to develop a procedure to degrade and remove explosives contained in water (ECW). Specifically, this investigation assessed the degradation and removal of TNT and DNT using advanced oxidation and sorption processes. The initial concentrations used for the experiments were 0.4–1.0 mg/L. For the advanced oxidation process it was used a batch reactor with an ultra violet light and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) concentrations of 50, 100 and 300 mg/L. The contact time with the H2O2 was 2 hours. This process reduced the initial concentration of the explosive in 44, 52 and 60%, respectively. The sorption process experiments used coal ash aggregate (CAA). In these experiments, the CAA was placed in small batch reactors in contact with the ECW for 2 hours. The amount of explosives that the aggregate can sorb was calculated to be 0.0254 mg TNT/g CAA according to the Freundlich constant.
