The purpose of this study was to evaluate different organic and chemical products for the control of the dry rot disease in yam (Dioscorea rotundata). Two experiments were performed at the Agricultural Experiment Substations at Corozal and Isabela of the University of Puerto Rico. The experimental design was a completely randomized blocks with seven (7) treatments and four (4) replications. In both field essays, the following treatments were evaluated; oxamil, NemaKill™, and Sesamin EC® , alone and in combinations with others. The Pratylenchus coffeae population levels in the yam bark were reduced with the applications for Sesamin EC® , however, non-significant statistical differences (α = 0.05) when compared with the control plots. In addition, the results demonstrated significant differences that the use of the Sesamin EC® and NemaKill™ was an effective treatment to reduce the severity and prevent yield loss under storage conditions. The use of this product, based on botanical extracts, in yam production would mean a reduction in the use of chemicals and therefore better preservation of the environment.
