Cochliomyia macellaria and Chrysomya rufifacies are the main insect species infesting decomposing cadavers in western Puerto Rico. The developmental cycle and temperature effects on larval growth in both species were studied at temperatures of 25, 30, and 35 ºC, under a photoperiod of 12:12 hours and 70-90% of relative humidity. The duration of the developmental period from oviposition to adult emergence was inversely proportional to the rearing temperature. Cochliomyia macellaria had an average developmental period of 12.0 and 8.7 days at 25 and 30 ºC, respectively, whereas a regime of 35 ºC was lethal for pupae. Chrysomya rufifacies had an average developmental period of 10.9, 9.0, and 8.1 days at 25, 30, and 35 ºC, respectively. To determine the larval age with 95 % reliability, larval length was registered using growth curves with prediction intervals. Both the highly predictable duration of larval development and the minimal variation in the length of larvae underscore the utility of both species as determinants of post mortem intervals. Paralucilia cf. wheeleri constitutes a possibly new record for Puerto Rico.
