Publication Orientation of collagen fibers by mechanical transduction on osteoblastic cells(2011) Boada-López, Jairo A.; Sundaram, Paul A.; College of Engineering; Díaz, Rubén; Diffoot, Nanette; Department of Mechanical Engineering; Romañach, Rodolfo J.MC3T3-E1 Osteoblastic cells were mechanically stimulated using a static load of 3, 6 and 9 lb during 2, 4, 6 and 8 days of incubation. The Collagen Type I expression rate was analyzed using the Near Infrared Microscope with Chemical Imaging (NIR-CI)and the alignment of the collagen fibers was observed with Confocal and Scanning Electron Microscope images. Results show that cells increase their collagen production with 3 and 6 lb with a 32.4 and 109 % more than the control sample at 8 days, and also a preferential alignment was achieved near to the direction of the load applied. The 9 lb load had a different effect over the collagen expression, which was lower when compared with the control sample and a preferential alignment was not obtained.
