This study investigates the relationship between CEO compensation and firm performance using a sample of 120 companies in the financial sector of the Russell 3000 Index. The variables used to measure the financial performance were return on assets (ROA) and return on equity (ROE). In addition, the relationship between executive compensation and variables related to the company and the executive itself was evaluated. To measure these objectives a panel data analysis was used. As expected, the results indicated that the total compensation of the CEO will be affected positively the larger the firm size (measured by its assets), the higher return on assets, and the longer the executive is at his position. Contrary to expectations, age and return on equity appear to adversely affect the total compensation of the CEO.
