Publication Tracing the evolution of two energy gaps in MgB2 with increasing disorder(2008) Escobar-Medina, Mauricio J.; Kim, Yong-Jihm; College of Arts and Science - Science; Radovan, Henri; Tomar, Maharaj S.; Department of Physics; Colón, SilvestreMagnesium Diboride (MgB2) is a material recently discovered to exhibit superconducting properties. A trace in the behavior of the energy gaps of this material is performed via numerical calculations by the establishment of a theoretical model based in the BCS theory. Bogoliubov/Valatin transformations are applied to treat the compound in its pure form; later on, when impurities are included, Anderson’s theory of dirty superconductors and Kim/Overhauser’s observations are implemented to describe the behavior of the energy gaps within the dirty limit. Finally, a weak localization correction, also worked out by Kim, is introduced when the concentration of impurities is increased. A comparison with experimental data is made. It is observed that inter-band scattering is predominant within the dirty limit while when the weak localization correction is adopted, intra-band scattering turns predominant.
