Publication Percepción de estudiantes universitarios sobre el ambiente de clase luego del Huracán María(2020-05-26) Peña-Rivera, Sofia M.; Fernández, MargaritaY.; College of Arts and Sciences - Art; Quiñones-Padovani, Carlos E.; Rodríguez-Nogueras, Enid; Department of Kinesiology; Colón-Reyes, OmarThe purpose of this study is to observe and document the perception and experiences of undergraduate students in the Department of Kinesiology of the University of Puerto Rico, Mayagüez Campus, about teacher-student interactions, physical changes in the classroom environment, and academic commitment after the aftermath of Hurricane María (HM) during the semesters of January 2017 and February 2018. The research questions were the following: 1. How do the undergraduate students who were enrolled in the Department of Kinesiology during these semesters perceive their academic commitment? 2. How do the Department of Kinesiology undergraduate students perceive the physical changes in their university environment after HM? 3. How do the Department of Kinesiology undergraduate students perceive student-teacher interaction after HM? 4. What differences, if any, exist in the students' perception according to the year of admission to the Department of Kinesiology? Undergraduate Kinesiology students completed a focus group where the following themes emerged: teacher-student interactions, physical changes in the classroom environment, physical appearance of the classrooms, location of the classrooms, materials in the courses, assigned tasks, academic commitment, routine , future recommendations to the university, experiences of Hurricane Maria, emotions expressed after the passage of HM, non-academic personal factors, students who are staying and the family. From the perception of the undergraduate students, it was stated that these students received support from the teachers, who showed empathy with the situation that occurred after HM. The perception of undergraduate students could be used by the university administration to face future natural disasters such as: hurricanes, earthquakes, and others.
