In a long baseline stellar interferometer, the optical beams are guided over several hundred meters by steering mirrors and generally propagated under vacuum. There is an urgent requirement to provide a simple mechanism through which the individual optical elements can be well positioned and aligned without breaking the vacuum. This thesis presents the results of design and fabrication, by interferometric methods, of a passive device that permits the alignment of long and complex optical paths such as the one described above. The device consists of a distorted phase diffraction grating recorded onto holographic film, in which the distortion gives the ability to capture multiple objects located longitudinally along the optical axis onto a single image plane. So, if each optical element to be aligned is provided with a reference objects, the system may be found to be aligned when the images of all the reference objects are simultaneously located on a single image plane. A simulator was constructed to prove the concept described, resulting in an initial system alignment precision of approximately 10%, nevertheless the precision can be improved if the system is adjusted in order to use grating with greater defocus.
