A quasi-uniform leaky-wave antenna for 5G was designed at 39 GHz using the new holey EBG gap-waveguide structure. The antenna is designed for n260 band, with the requirements that it is compact, low-cost and has high-power handling capability. The gap-waveguide structure makes it possible for the antenna to be only metal, simplifies the manufacturing process, and reduces the fabrication costs; at the same time the all-metal design enhances the power-handling capability and reduces the losses when compared to other architectures where a substrate is needed. A leaky-wave design was chosen because of its simplicity and ability to position the beam in a particular direction without the need of active components; its only downside being its high side-lobes. To reduce them, a Taylor amplitude distribution with a side-lobe level of -23 dB was employed by controlling the α and β constants by tapering the slot's length and waveguide's width. The antenna was fed by coaxial to gap-waveguide transition and provided an impedance bandwidth below -15 dB throughout the entire n260 band, a gain of 19 dB at 39 GHz, a side-lobe level of -21 dB, front-to-back-ratio of 34 dB and a HPBW of 6 degrees.
