Publication Detección de Campylobacter Jejuni en las incubadoras de una planta procesadora de pollos parrilleros de Puerto Rico(2005) Malavez Acevedo, Yadira; Latorre Acevedo, José R.; College of Agricultural Sciences; Negrón, Edna; Chaparro, Mildred; Department of Food Science and Technology; Mari Mutt, José A.A total of 960 chicken eggs from a hatchery in Puerto Rico were analyzed to detect the presence of Campylobacter jejuni. A cluster sampling with a binomial distribution was made. Random samples were taken in duplicate from 5 lots. Samples were taken from the inside and outside of eggs to determine if C. jejuni can be vertically transmitted. Samples were also taken from transport vehicles and incubators, as possible sources of horizontal transmission. The isolation of Campylobacter was made using traditional culture techniques and the identification of the species jejuni was made using the API Campy biochemical test. Isolated bacteria were characterized using the antibiotic susceptibility test. Campylobacter jejuni was isolated from the interior of two lots of eggs (incidence <1.6 %) and on the surface of one lot (incidence <3.8 %). One sample of the incubators was positive for C. jejuni, but the bacterium was not isolated from any truck sample. These results suggest that C. jejuni can be vertically transmitted but probably this is not its primary means of transmission of this bacterium. The incubators and the transport truck are not significant sources of horizontal transmission.
