Physical fitness is related to numerous physical and physiological changes from childhood to adulthood. Furthermore, physical training allows to improve health and increase musculoskeletal performance in human body. Currently, some research is limited to specific results of strength and flexibility, but do not include other components of physical fitness. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of muscular resistance and flexibility training on physical fitness in college students of the University of Puerto Rico (RUM). The battery of tests used to assess the physical condition of the participants was FITNESSGRAM®. The alternate hypotheses of the investigation were as follows: 1) The combined experimental group will have a significantly greater effect on physical fitness, than specific muscular resistance training and specific flexibility training; 2) The muscular resistance training group will not have relevant changes on the flexibility component. It was evidenced that both hypotheses were correct after completing the study. It was also proven that the combined group and muscular resistance group improved VO2max after 8 weeks of treatment. In conclusion, these findings suggest that short-term combined training helps improve some components of physical fitness in university students.
