This research describes the relationship between chemical manufacturing presence and cancer incidence in Puerto Rico using spatial regression analysis. A simulation study of the statistical tests used for model specification suggests that the spatial regression model specified is adequate. This study shows that spatial regression analysis is a viable option to study socioeconomic and public health data. Public health data was sourced from the Puerto Rico Cancer Registry. Socioeconomic data was sourced from the Bureau of Labor Statistics Puerto Rico Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages and the U.S. Census American Community Survey. Spatial coordinates were sourced from the Administrative Boundary Common Operational Database published by the United Nations. Results show a positive (ecological) statistical relationship between pharmaceutical manufacturing employment and breast cancer incidence. Backwards stepwise regression shows (ecological) positive statistical relationships between chemical (pharmaceutical) manufacturing firm count and all cancer sites and specifically for lung and bronchus cancer incidence.
