In particular, the Unit Commitment, Reactive Power Dispatch, State Estimation, and Power System Restoration problems have been addressed in this work. These optimization problems come from two main areas within power systems engineering: Operations Planning and Generation/Transmission Operation. The problems considered in this work had not been previously addressed using the Particle Swarm Optimization technique. Therefore, the work presented in this thesis represents a major contribution to the application of modern heuristic techniques in the power systems engineering area. All problems considered in this work were properly formulated as nonlinear optimization problems subject to the applicable constraints. The proposed solution methodologies were validated and tested using well known and/or standard test systems. The results obtained compared favorably with those already available, thus showing the effectiveness and applicability of the Particle Swarm Optimization technique for solving complex power engineering problems.
