The main intention of the study was to obtain data on woman workers, both industrialist and professional, in the agricultural sector of Puerto Rico. The second objective of the study was to compare the labor productivity of women versus that of men in the agricultural coffee sector in the towns that comprise the Region of Mayagüez and the Sub region of Lajas for the year 2002. On one hand, data was obtained on the number of agricultural operators that were active members and that participated in the activities of the Farmers Association of Puerto Rico. To achieve the first objective, data was collected from the Farmer’s Association of Puerto Rico, the College of Agronomy of Puerto Rico and the Department of Agriculture of Puerto Rico. It was discovered that according to the list of women provided by the Farmer’s Association of Puerto Rico, in the country there was a total of 182 women registered as operators, out of a total number of 2,469 members. In addition, information about the professional women in agriculture was obtained through the registry of the Professional Association of Agronomists of Puerto Rico in which there where 304 female associates in 2002 with a license to work in the profession out of a total of 1,298 members. Data from the Department of Agriculture of Puerto Rico was obtained, specifically from the Mayagüez region and the Lajas Sub region. Results of the analysis showed differences in the manual labor productivity between genders. When the labor productivity of women versus men was compared in the agricultural sector of the coffee industry, the analysis of the data showed that the men’s productivity was greater. Women are represented in the agricultural enterprises of the country, but they are not a significant factor in the agricultural labor force in any of the examined sectors (agricultural operators, workers, students and professionals).
