Análisis de viabilidad para la producción de arroz en Puerto Rico

The investigation was done with the purpose of analyzing economic viability of rice sowing in Puerto Rico, using data of recent studies done at the Agricultural Experiment Station in Lajas. At the time of this investigation there are no commercial rice sowing on the Island. In order to carry out the analysis, cash flow and investment cost were determined using a crop in an area of 896 “cuerdas”. Afterwards, Investment Payback (PBP), Net Present Value (NPV) and Internal Rate of Return (IRR) were calculated. We found that the commercial rice sowing is economically viable if the recommended practices of agriculture are used. Various recommendations are offered for public policy to ensure our food supply.
