Publication Effects of processing on the properties of aluminum-cerium-based alloys(2020-12-09) Vázquez, Mairym; Suárez, O. Marcelo; College of Engineering; Calcagno, Bárbara O.; Ríos, Orlando; Department of Materials Science and Engineering; Maldonado-Cardenales, NoemíThis research seeks to characterize Al-Ce-based alloys processed via different routes. These production methods include powder-in-tube, gravity casting, and powder extrusion. Al-Ce alloys samples were made by gravity casting and powder-in-tube and characterized to assess the effects of Ce levels and processing method on the properties of the material. Also, Al-Ce-Mg samples were prepared via powder extrusion and powder-in-tube. These samples were characterized and compared to the cast specimens to have a better understanding of the effect of processing on the material properties. General characterization included x-ray diffraction, electron microscopy, optical microscopy, density measurements, tensile tests, as well as Vickers and Rockwell hardness tests. The present research demonstrated that: a) there exists a linear correlation between material hardness and Ce level in cast Al-Ce specimens; b) Ce at hypereutectic level on Al-Ce samples via powder-in-tube favors a reaction with Fe and Ni at the interface between the specimens and the sheathing material, avoiding the formation of the Fe-containing needle-like phase. c) Outstanding tensile strength and consolidation was achieved via powder extrusion without further thermal treatment of the material; and d) nanostructure stability in Al-Ce specimens was observed after thermomechanical processing to yield a bulk nanostructured alloy.
