Publication Exploring the determinants of students' travel behavior in the face of parking scarcity problems(2020-05-28) Arroyo-Román, Carolyn Marie; Rodríguez-Román, Daniel; College of Engineering; Cruzado-Vélez, Ivette; Macchiavelli, Raúl E.; Department of Civil Engineering; Santana-Morant, DamarisFinding a parking spot at the University of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez (UPRM) can be a daily struggle. Currently, the Campus mismatch between parking demand and supply has resulted in a substantial number of people, mostly students, choosing to park informally or illegally inside and outside the Campus daily. This research project aimed to study the determinants that influence the UPRM students' parking and mode choice behavior thought a campus travel behavior study using online surveys. It also evaluated the response to the implementation of a parking pricing policy. In addition to conducting exploratory data analysis, discrete choice models were estimated to understand parking and travel behaviors. Results show that the current parking situation directly affects the class attendance of UPRM students. Through the models, it was found that the variables that influence the selection of vehicle-as-driver are being a student for three years or more at UPRM, having the vehicle registered at the University's Department of Traffic and Surveillance, and the trip origin. It was also found that walking time to destination, search time for parking, and parking pricing influence the students' parking choice. As the parking cost increases, the preference for a paid parking option decrease. The preference for the paid option will also decrease if its time attributes increase.
