Publication Motivation, gamification, and language learning: Developing innovative ways to create and retain motivation in the English language classroom(2023-05-06) Ferrer González, Derrick N.; Rivera, Rosita L.; College of Arts and Sciences - Art; Soto, Sandra L.; Morciglio, Waleska; Department of English; Rodríguez, GrisellLearning motivation is an often discussed issue in the world of education, specifically when it comes to increasing and retaining it in the classroom. One medium that has been integrated into education to increase engagement from students is video games. Techniques such as game-based learning and gamification have been developing for years as alternatives for creating and retaining motivation in the classroom. This study involved the creation of four video games, focused on English language grammar, applying these techniques to the Basic English classroom in UPRM. A questionnaire containing Likert scales and open-ended questions was used to collect data about students’ experiences with video games, whether an increase in learning motivation was felt, what were the most engaging aspects, general feedback from their experiences with these particular video games, and recommendations on how a project like this might improve. The data showed a general positive reception to the games, with most reporting an increase of learning motivation. The most engaging factors included following a story, completing various objectives, and desiring to complete the games. Aspects that could improve included greater length, diversity of activities, and difficulty. Overall, the results show great promise in using video games as language learning tools in the English classroom.
