Publication A decision support system for gate operations at Clarence Cannon National Wildlife Refuge (CCNWR) in Pike County, MO(2020-05-25) Velez-Ramos, Oscar A.; Pagán-Trinidad, Ismael; College of Engineering; Zapata-López, Raúl E.; Kopsky, Raymond Jr.; Department of Civil Engineering; Figueroa-Medina, Carmen I.The purpose of the project is to create a decision support system (DSS) by developing guidelines on how to operate a gravity drain structure gate (GDSG) in the Clarence Cannon National Wildlife Refuge (CCNWR), located in Pike County, MO. The purpose of the gate is flood control. The gate allows water from the Mississippi River (through backwater on Bryant’s Creek) to flow into the CCNWR. The gate and the downstream protection, which includes Articulated Concrete Block (ACB) and riprap revetment areas, is already been built and in placed. The gate operation is modelled and simulated to predict the water flow and depth behavior with time. Velocities downstream of the gate are compared against maximum allowable velocities to ensure stone dynamic stability for the riprap protection already on site. The gate operation rules provide a decision support system to efficiently and safely manage river flows for flood control.
