All the water that is used in the University of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez (UPRM) is supplied by the Puerto Rico Aqueduct and Sewer Authority (PRASA), but its infrastructure has proven to be fragile and results in economic losses. Alternatives to diversify water supply sources include the development of a groundwater supply system. This study evaluates the development of a groundwater supply system at the Engineering Complex. Geographic Information System (GIS) technologies, site’s characteristics and water consumption patterns allowed to design a distribution system which can be replicated to other locations inside the University. Results showed that the proposed system will save approximately $15K every year. If similar projects are developed throughout UPRM, a 37% reduction of actual costs can be achieved.
