A.; Riquelme Villagrán, Ernesto; Latorre Acevedo, José R.; Department of Animal Science; Borges Delgado, SoniaTo estimate the potential effect on the dairy industry of the implementation of the National Mastitis Council’s (NMC) proposal to reduce the present regulatory limit for somatic cell count (SCC) of 750,000 cells/ml of crude milk to 400,000 cell/ml, 302,995 herd test day records from Dairy Herd Improvement program of Puerto Rico (PRDHIA) during years 2004 and 2005 were analyzed. The association among managementpractices, SCC, bacterial counts (BC) and presence of the most common mastitis pathogens were determined using data from bulk milk samples and information gathered with a questionnaire in 71 herds selected on previous SCC. Mean of herd test day milk yield per cow and of somatic cell scores (SCS) were 17.2 kg. and 3.9, respectively. Management practices significantly associated with SCC were, the use of post dip disinfectant after therapeuticintramammary infusion, disinfection of teats before an intramammary infusion, feeding of cows after instead of during milking, drying teats before placing on the milking unit and inclusion of the diameter of long milk pipeline of adequate diameter in the milking machine. Assuming applicability of information from PRDHIA herds to non PRDHIA herds, the proportion of individual cow test days for which exceeded the limit set by NMC proposal was 20%.
