The purpose of this master’s thesis is to study the historical drama Román Baldorioty de Castro written by the Puerto Rican writer of the Literary Generation of the 1930’s, Cesáreo Rosa Nieves. This project aims to rescue certain fundamental historical figures and events related to the emancipatory struggle of the Puerto Rican people. Our analysis focuses mainly on the artistic-literary ways in which Rosa Nieves denounces the strategies of the state exercising their power to silence the nationalist leader of the 20th century, Pedro Albizu Campos, through the use of the autonomist leader of the 19th century, Román Baldorioty de Castro, as a historically significant symbol. In this play, the setting, the characters, and the situations which are reminiscent of the 19th century, seek to reflect, give a voice to, and shine a light on the historical crisis the playwright and his contemporaries were living through.
