Publication Viking metal: Interpreting Norse literature via popular culture adaptation(2023-12-11) Keough Domínguez, Christian J.; Haydock, Nickolas; College of Arts and Sciences - Art; Irizarry, Jose M.; Rios, Hugo; Department of English; Zapata Medina, Rocio I.This thesis delves into how Norse literature and mythology are transformed and reimagined in popular culture music, specifically through the analytical framework of Adaptation Theory. In the realm of adaptations, issues of fidelity and authenticity frequently emerge, leading to debates about the legitimacy of these contemporary media manifestations. Often, critics have dismissed these forms as lacking authenticity. This study challenges such critiques, advocating for the recognition of popular culture adaptations — particularly Viking Metal music — as valuable tools for both analysis and education. This examination unfolds through an exploration of popular culture, an introductory overview of the history of Metal music, and an in-depth look at five exemplary Viking Metal bands. Consequently, this thesis weaves together interdisciplinary strands encompassing ideology, culture, history, and the art of adaptation.
