dc.description.abstract Puerto Rico is located in a high seismicity zone, hence it is essential the development and implementation of state-of-the-art dynamic analysis in order to predict and prevent possible damages on structures. At present, in Puerto Rico there is a lack of a facility to conduct dynamic tests on structures that are not limited by scale. For this reason, a hybrid simulation facility is being developed at University of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez. Hybrid simulation is a technique that combines experimental tests and analytic models for evaluating the dynamic performance of structures subjected to dynamic loads. The hybrid simulation facility consists of a two channel MTS Flex Test 60 control system with quasi-static hybrid simulation capabilities. The calibration of the system was performed with the analysis and hybrid testing of a 3-story 2-bay steel frame subjected to the Canoga Park seismic record. An exterior column for the first story was tested in the laboratory at a 1:4 scale while the rest of the structure was modeled analytically using the software OpenSees and OpenFresco. Fully numerical coupled simulations were executed as a benchmark to validate the hybrid simulation facility tests. Different substructuring techniques, simplified conventional and conventional substructuring techniques, were considered in search of an efficient technique that produces acceptable results with simple experimental configuration. en_US
