Abstract
This thesis investigates the artistic praxis of renowned contemporary Dominican artist Raquel Paiewonsky and its connection to the coloniality of gender and decolonial feminism. Through the analysis of selected works -spanning painting, photography, installation, collage, performance, and video- it addresses key topics such as violence against women, intersubjectivity, and patriarchal structures, which have permeated Latin American society since the dawn of modernity. Paiewonsky’s multifaceted art enables polysemic interpretations that align with decolonial feminism as an ideal analytical framework, both for its critique of gender-race-class hierarchies and its emphasis on epistemological decolonization. Thus, the study concludes that her work not only denounces and resists the coloniality of gender but also fosters coalition-building and processes of subjective and intersubjective liberation, promoting more just and emancipatory identities. This exploration is further enriched by a brief overview of other Dominican women artists who, like Paiewonsky, have challenged traditional canons in the nation’s visual arts to highlight the grave issues affecting women in Dominican society.
