Assessment of the impact of agricultural extension training on COVID-19 in the meat supply chain in Puerto Rico

dc.description.abstract The COVID 19 pandemic has caused many effects in different sectors around the world. Supply chains is one of the areas that is facing many difficulties due to confinement, deaths from COVID-19 and lack of raw materials. In the United States and Puerto Rico, this sector was affected, due to the shortage of labor and other services. The purpose of this research is to assess how COVID-19 has affected the meat supply chain in Puerto Rico. Educational, economic, social, and microbiological areas were studied. A total of 12 meat industries and 120 individuals in Puerto Rico participated in the study. The process was carried out in different stages: sampling in two stages, answering the questionnaire (pre and posttest) and training. Within the results on the general knowledge of COVID-19, 98% of those surveyed keep 6 feet between their peers, 94% indicate that the virus spreads from person to person, and 22% were unaware that the virus can be transmitted through respiratory droplets, contaminated surfaces, and nasal secretions. 99% answered that they remain at home if they test positive for the disease and 97% are aware that an asymptomatic person can infect others. Regarding the genetic presence of SARS-COV-2, in the first sample, 100% negativity was obtained and in the second test, one (1) location was positive. The socioeconomic findings showed that 57% received guidance on COVID-19 by PROSHA, the Department of Health or the company. 50% revealed that May was the month with the greatest impact during the quarantine and 97% were affected in the acquisition of labor, purchase and obtaining raw material. Finally, the 75% increase in the costs of the final product caused by the pandemic effects. To conclude, this study showed that the participating location carried out techniques for the prevention, management, and control of the COVID-19 virus in their institutions. In addition, employees demonstrated adherence to them, which facilitates the implementation of these measures. Despite these determinations, it is very important to continue with protection measures, increase hygiene and disinfection techniques to reduce the risk of spreading infections. en_US
dc.description.abstract La pandemia del COVID 19 ha ocasionado muchos efectos en diferentes sectores alrededor del mundo. Las cadenas de suministros es una de las áreas que está enfrentando muchas dificultados debido al confinamiento, muertes por COVID-19 y falta de materia prima. En Estados Unidos y Puerto Rico, este sector se vio afectado, debido a la escasez de mano de obra y otros servicios. El propósito de esta investigación es evaluar cómo ha afectado el COVID-19 a la cadena de suministros de carne en Puerto Rico. Se estudiaron las áreas: educativas, económica, social y microbiológica. Se contó con la participación de 12 industrias cárnicas del país y una muestra total de 120 personas. El proceso se llevó a cabo en diferentes etapas: toma de muestra en dos tiempos, contestación de cuestionario (pre y post prueba) y capacitación. Dentro de los resultados sobre el conocimiento general del COVID-19 el 98% de los encuestados mantienen 6 pies entre sus compañeros. El 94% indicó que el virus se propaga persona a persona. El 22% desconocía que el virus se puede transmitirse a través de gotitas respiratorias, superficies contaminadas y secreciones nasales. El 99% respondió permanecer en su hogar en caso de resultar positivo a la enfermedad y 97% está consciente que una persona asintomática puede infectar a otros. En cuanto a la presencia genética de SARS-COV-2 en la primera muestra se obtuvo un 100% de negatividad y en la segunda prueba una (1) localidad arrojó positivo. Los hallazgos socioeconómicos evidenciaron que el 57% recibió orientación sobre el COVID-19 por PROSHA, Departamento de Salud o la compañía. El 50% reveló que mayo fue el mes de mayor impacto durante la cuarentena y el 97% se vio afectado en la adquisición de mano de obra, compra y obtención de materia prima. Por último, el 75% indicó aumento en los costos del producto final a causa de los efectos ocasionados por la pandemia. Para concluir, este estudio evidenció que los centros participantes llevaban a cabo técnicas para la prevención, manejo y control del virus del COVID-19 en sus instituciones. Además, los empleados demostraron tener apego con las mismas, lo que facilita la implementación de estas medidas. A pesar de estos hallazgos es muy importante continuar con medidas de protección, aumentar las técnicas de higiene y desinfección para disminuir el riesgo de propagación de infecciones. en_US
