Response to phenotypic recurrent selection for resistance to ๐˜‹๐˜ช๐˜ข๐˜ฑ๐˜ฉ๐˜ข๐˜ฏ๐˜ช๐˜ข ๐˜ฉ๐˜บ๐˜ข๐˜ญ๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜ข๐˜ต๐˜ข (L.) (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) in tropical pumpkin (๐˜Š๐˜ถ๐˜ค๐˜ถ๐˜ณ๐˜ฃ๐˜ช๐˜ต๐˜ข ๐˜ฎ๐˜ฐ๐˜ด๐˜ค๐˜ฉ๐˜ข๐˜ต๐˜ข Duchesne)

Abstract
In order to determine the effectiveness of phenotypic recurrent selection for resistance to melonworm, two cycles of selection were carried out on ๐˜Š๐˜ถ๐˜ค๐˜ถ๐˜ณ๐˜ฃ๐˜ช๐˜ต๐˜ข ๐˜ฎ๐˜ฐ๐˜ด๐˜ค๐˜ฉ๐˜ข๐˜ต๐˜ข โ€˜Taรญna Doradaโ€™. Selection was based on results of a laboratory detached leaf test followed by a field evaluation. Three experiments were then conducted in two locations, Lajas and Isabela, during July to November 2007 to compare the base population (โ€˜Taรญna Doradaโ€™ [TD] Cycle 0) and the two cycles of selection (TD-Cycle 1 and TD-Cycle 2). In addition, the experiments included two commercial genotypes (โ€˜Solerโ€™ and โ€˜Verde Luzโ€™) and two experimental genotypes (โ€˜Nigerian Localโ€™ and PR-MWR1). The materials were evaluated for foliar damage, number of eggs and larvae, and yield. The effect of phenotypic recurrent selection for resistance was not as great as anticipated at the start of this research. A slight reduction was observed in numbers of eggs and larvae after two cycles of selection. Two cycles of selection for resistance had no effect on yield and average fruit weight. High variances were observed for number of eggs and larvae. As a consequence, for future cycles of selection more replications (plots) and/or samples (number of leaves per plant) are necessary to find differences between genotypes and carry out effective selection. Some modifications of selection procedures may be needed to decrease sampling and experimental errors.
Con el propรณsito de evaluar la efectividad de selecciรณn para resistencia al gusano del melรณn, se llevaron a cabo dos ciclos de selecciรณn fenotรญpica recurrente en ๐˜Š๐˜ถ๐˜ค๐˜ถ๐˜ณ๐˜ฃ๐˜ช๐˜ต๐˜ข ๐˜ฎ๐˜ฐ๐˜ด๐˜ค๐˜ฉ๐˜ข๐˜ต๐˜ข โ€˜Taรญna Doradaโ€™. La selecciรณn se hizo a base de los resultados obtenidos en la hoja de prueba suelta, seguida de evaluaciรณn en el campo. Tres experimentos se llevaron a cabo en dos localidades, Isabela y Lajas, durante julio a noviembre 2007 para comparar la poblaciรณn original (โ€˜Taรญna Doradaโ€™ [TD] Ciclo 0) y los dos ciclos de selecciรณn (TD-Ciclo 1 y TD-Ciclo 2). En adicciรณn, los experimentos incluyeron dos genotipos de interรฉs comercial (โ€˜Solerโ€™ y โ€˜Verde Luzโ€™) y dos genotipos experimentales (โ€˜Nigerian Localโ€™ y PR-MWR1). Todos los materiales fueron evaluados para daรฑo foliar, nรบmero de huevos y larvas, y rendimiento. El efecto de selecciรณn fenotรญpica recurrente para resistencia no fue tan exitoso como se anticipรณ al comenzar la investigaciรณn. Hubo una leve reducciรณn de huevos y larvas despuรฉs de dos ciclos de selecciรณn. No hubo un impacto sobre rendimiento y tamaรฑo de fruto despuรฉs de dos ciclos de selecciรณn para resistencia. Hubo varianzas altas para huevos y larvas. Como consecuencia, implica que para futuras ciclos de selecciรณn se necesitan muchas replicas (parcelas) y/o muestras (nรบmero de hojas por parcela) para diferenciar entre genotipos y realizar una selecciรณn efectiva. Existen factores en el proceso de selecciรณn que pueden manejarse de manera tal, que se reduzcan los errores de muestreo y experimental.
