La brecha de género en el sector agrícola de Puerto Rico

Abstract

This research evaluated the use that agricultural entrepreneurs give to the computer and the Internet in managing their agricultural businesses, and the perception of the participants regarding their position in the agricultural business. The purpose of this study was to determine if there is a gender gap in the digital age in the agricultural sector of Puerto Rico. An instrument was developed which was administered to 36 agribusinessmen of Puerto Rico; for comparison purposes, equal numbers of women and men were interviewed. All the people interviewed took training courses on the use and management of the computer offered by the CEMA Project, in the case of women, and the CETAA Project, in the case of men, both from the Agricultural Economics Department of the College of Agricultural Science. The study revealed that men recognize themselves as farmers, while women recognize themselves as agricultural entrepreneurs. The results reflect that the gap is in favor of men in terms of content of use, this refers to knowledge of technological applications that exist for phones or tablets that are useful in the management of agribusiness. However, regarding access to the computer and Internet connection; to the use that is given to the computer and the internet; and the technological ability, the gap is in favor of women.

Esta investigación evaluó el uso que las agroempresarias y los agroempresarios dan a la computadora y al Internet en la administración de sus negocios agrícolas y determinó la percepción de los participantes en cuanto a su posición en el negocio agrícola. El propósito de este estudio era determinar si existe brecha de género en la era digital en el sector agrícola de Puerto Rico. Se desarrolló un instrumento el cual fue administrado a 36 agroempresarios de Puerto Rico; para efectos de comparación, se entrevistó igual cantidad de mujeres y de hombres. Todas las personas entrevistadas tomaron cursos de capacitación sobre el uso y manejo de la computadora que ofrece el Proyecto CEMA, en el caso de las mujeres, y el Proyecto CETAA, en el caso de los hombres, ambos del Departamento de Economía Agrícola del Colegio de Ciencias Agrícolas. El estudio reveló que los hombres se reconocen como agricultores, mientras las mujeres se reconocen como agroempresarias. Los resultados reflejan que la brecha está a favor de los hombres en cuanto al contenido de uso, esto se refiere al conocimiento de las aplicaciones tecnológicas que existen para los teléfonos o tabletas que son útiles en la adminstración del agronegocio. Sin embargo, en cuanto al acceso a la computadora y a conexión de Internet; al uso que se le da a la computadora y al internet; y la habilidad tecnológica, la brecha está a favor de las mujeres.
