dc.description.abstract | A detailed 5 year study of algal community structure at 8 coral reefs distributed across the insular shelf at La Parguera, Puerto Rico was undertaken between 2003 and 2007. Significant temporal variation in species cover and composition was documented for the shelf edge reefs. Conversely little temporal variation at mid shelf or inshore reefs occurred during the same time period. Previously considered as being a relatively undisturbed ecosystem, the shelf edge reefs in the southwest Puerto Rico were documented to be undergoing a phase shift from a coraldominated reef to an algal dominated reef. The significant and dramatic increase in total cover of shelf edge benthic algae was calculated to be 43%. Composition of the algal flora also changed during the period. Multivariate statistical analyses indicated that differences in algae composition between reefs were influenced by differences in water depth and distance from shore. The fine-scale examination of coral reef-associated algae resulted in recognition of a number of new elements to the Puerto Rican flora as well as recognition and description of four new species. New records for the flora included: Lithophyllum congestum, Metapeyssonnelia corallepida, Dictyota pfaffii, Peyssonnelia boergesenii, Caulerpa nummularia, Myriogramme prostrata, Kallymenia limminghei and Antithamnionella graeffei. Species new to science were Halichrysis corallinarius, Peyssonnelia flavescens, Metapeyssonnelia milleporoides, Botryocladia iridescens and Cresia opalescens. | en_US |
dc.description.abstract | Entre el 2003 y el 2007, se realizó un estudio detallado de las comunidades de algas en 8 arrecifes de coral distribuidos a través de la plataforma insular de La Parguera, Puerto Rico. En los arrecifes del borde la plataforma insular (veril) se documentó variación temporal significativa en la cobertura de espacio por especies y composición de algas, mientras que los arrecifes localizados en el centro de la plataforma insular y aquellos cercanos a la orilla no presentaron variaciones temporales significativas. Los arrecifes del veril demuestran indicios de un cambio de fase de ser dominados por corales a la dominancia de las algas. Los resultados de los estudios bénticos muestran un incremento de 43% en la cobertura total de algas en el veril lo que se considera significativo y la composición de la flora de algas también cambió durante el mismo periodo. Análisis estadísticos multivariados indicaron que las diferencias en la composición de algas entre los arrecifes fueron influenciados por factores tales como la profundidad y la distancia a la línea de costa. Durante los estudios a pequeña escala de las algas asociadas a los arrecifes de coral, se describen nuevos elementos en la flora de las algas en Puerto Rico. De igual manera, se descubrieron cinco especies nuevas. Los nuevos reportes a la flora de Puerto Rico incluyen: Lithophyllum congestum, Metapeyssonnelia corallepida, Dictyota pfaffii, Peyssonnelia boergesenii, Caulerpa nummularia, Myriogramme prostrata, Kallymenia limminghei y Antithamnionella graeffei.
