Abstract
Pesticides have become a major problem recently because of their indiscriminate use. This has caused the excess pesticides to be transported to nearby surface and groundwater water reservoirs through widespread runoff and often percolation. This project assessed the presence and concentration of atrazine and glyphosate in streams adjacent to crop sites in the western region of Puerto Rico. For the study, physical, chemical, and biological water quality parameters, as well as the contaminant’s concentrations, were measured in surface water samples collected on a weekly basis. Additionally, the adsorption capacity for atrazine removal was evaluated for two granular activated carbons by applying the Langmuir, Freundlich, and the BET linear and non-linear mathematical models to prepared suspensions. The experimental results indicated that the material “GAC 2” exhibited the largest adsorption capacity (3.184 mg/g). Additionally, the BET non-linear mathematical model adjusted the most to the data for “GAC 2” with an R2 coefficient of 0.8813, therefore, the BET non-linear model can be used to predict the behavior of this system.
