dc.description.abstract Collembolans are small hexapods characterized by the presence of a ventral tube and a jumping organ known as a furcula, for which they are called springtails. Although more than 700 species are recorded from the Neotropics, little is known about the diversity of collembolans in the Greater Antilles. Seventy-seven species have been reported from Puerto Rico. This study is part of an effort to complete the inventory of Puerto Rican springtails. I collected collembolans associated with red mangrove (Rhizophora mangle), focusing in the area within 2 m from the shoreline. A total of 44 species were found, 12 are new reports for Puerto Rico and 6 are new to science. Statistical analysis showed no relationship between forest extension and number of species. Mangroves located in estuaries had the highest species diversity. The estimated total species richness for collembolans in red mangrove is 48. en_US
