Counter-ion sulfonated poly(styrene-isobutylene-styrene) membranes for the separation of urea from water

Abstract
Sulfonated poly(styrene-isobutylene-styrene) (S-SIBS) membranes were prepared for the removal of urea from water by filtration. S-SIBS membranes were prepared by sulfonation with acetyl sulfate, followed by solvent casting and counter-ion substitution (Na+, K+, Ca2+, Gdm+). Filtration experiments were conducted at various pH levels to determine the effect of counter-ions on urea removal. S-SIBS membrane with Na showed the best results for urea adsorption. Urea quantification was performed with High Performance Liquid Chromatography with UV detection using AOAC Method 2003.14.
Membranas de poli(estireno-isobutileno-estireno) sulfonadas (S-SIBS) fueron preparadas para remover urea del agua mediante filtración. Membranas de S-SIBS fueron sulfonadas con sulfato de acetilo, moldeadas por solvente y sustitución de contraiones (Na⁺, K⁺, Ca²⁺, Gdm⁺). Se realizaron filtraciones a distintos niveles de pH para evaluar el efecto de contraiones en la remoción de urea, S-SIBS-Na mostrando la mayor adsorción. La cuantificación de urea se realizó mediante cromatografía líquida de alta resolución con detección UV, utilizando el método AOAC 2003.14.
