Factores que afectan las exportaciones de la industria de farmacéuticos y medicinas de Puerto Rico

Abstract

This study analyzes the effect of government investment on infrastructure, the cost of industrial energy, and the lifespan of fiscal policy, with the total exports of the manufacturing sector, and the pharmaceutical industry of Puerto Rico. For this study, the Ordinary Least Squares model was used with data for the period of 1965 to 2011. Two regressions were estimated using various functional forms. The results of the regression model indicates that government investment on infrastructure and the cost of industrial energy are significant and directly related to the total exports for the manufacturing sector and the pharmaceutical industry of Puerto Rico. Although the relationships are non significant, this study shows that fiscal policies negatively affects exports, except for Section 936 which seemed to positively impact the exports of the pharmaceutical industry.

Este estudio analiza el efecto de la inversión en infraestructura, el costo de energía industrial y la vigencia de política fiscal en las exportaciones del sector manufacturero y de la industria de farmacéuticos y medicinas de Puerto Rico. En este estudio se utilizó el modelo de Mínimos Cuadrados Ordinarios con datos para el periodo de 1965 al 2011 y se estimaron dos regresiones con varias formas funcionales. Los resultados del modelo de regresión indican que la inversión en infraestructura de Puerto Rico y el costo de energía industrial se relacionan directa y de manera significativa con las exportaciones del sector manufacturero y la industria de farmacéuticos y medicinas de Puerto Rico. Aunque la relación no es significativa, este estudio refleja que las políticas fiscales afectaron de manera negativa las exportaciones, con excepción de la Sección 936 que refleja un impacto positivo para las exportaciones de la industria de farmacéuticos.
