dc.description.abstract This thesis deals with the comparison in performance of frequency selective surface backed folded slot antennas and a cavity backed folded slot antenna. An FSS layer is added to an inductively fed and a capacitively fed FSA to measure their response and compare them to the nominal response of a cavity-backed FSA. Through this evaluation and comparison, it was determined that the responses obtained the FSS-backed FSAs were comparable to the ones that were obtained with the CBFSA, with the added benefit of having four times more bandwidth. This led us to conclude that an FSS can be used as an effective reflector that both suppresses surface wave propagation and parallel plate modes and provides a similar response to a cavity in terms of impedance, return loss, and gain. Using an FSS eliminates the need of using a cavity to reflect radiated energy towards the main lobe. en_US
