Distribution of Harpellales (Kickxellomycotina) in Culicidae and Chironomidae in Urban sites in Mayagüez and Arecibo, Puerto Rico

dc.description.abstract Harpellales fungi are obligate symbionts. They need a live host in order to grow and reproduce. They are found in the digestive tract of various arthropods (including insects), attached without penetration to the gut lining. The majority of insects that are associated with Harpellales live in freshwater habitats such as streams and lakes. Common host families include Chironomidae, Simuliidae and Culicidae within the order Diptera and other insect orders such as Ephemeroptera and Plecoptera. In this investigation, we established the occurrence of Harpellales in the Culicidae and Chironomidae families in Puerto Rico. We sampled mosquito (Culicidae) and bloodworm (Chironomidae) larvae in urban sites in Arecibo and Mayaguez. After sampling and dissecting the collected larvae, we found three species of Harpellales. The first report for Arecibo was an unidentified Smittium species in the mosquito Aedes sp. In Chironomus sp. (Chironomidae) larvae, we found two Stachylina species attached to the peritrophic membrane in the midgut, Stachylina lentica and Stachylina grandispora. These species represent new records for the island. Based on the frequency analysis, we were able to conclude that in Puerto Rico, there is a higher prevalence of Harpellales in Chironomidae larvae in comparison to Culicidae larvae. en_US
dc.description.abstract Los hongos Harpellales son simbiontes obligados. Estos necesitan de un hospedero vivo para poder crecer y reproducirse. Se encuentran en tracto digestivo de muchos artrópodos (incluyendo los insectos), atados a la membrana del intestino sin penetrarla. La mayoría de los insectos asociados a los Harpellales viven en habitad de agua dulce como arroyos y lagos. Familias de hospederos comunes incluyen Chironomidae, Simuliidae, y Culicidae dentro del orden Diptera y otros ordenes de insectos como Ephemeroptera y Plecoptera. En esta investigación, establecimos la ocurrencia de Harpellales en las familias Culicidae y Chironomidae en Puerto Rico. Realizamos un muestreo en zonas urbanas en los pueblos de Arecibo y Mayagüez. Luego de muestrear y disectar las larvas colectadas, se encontraron tres especies de Harpellales. El primer reporte en Arecibo fue una especie no identificada de Smittium en una larva del mosquito Aedes sp. En larvas de Chironomus sp. (Chironomidae) se encontraron dos especies de Stachylina atadas a la membrana peritorfica de intestino medio, Stachylina lentica y Stachylina grandispora. Estas especies representan un nuevo record para la isla. Basado en los análisis de frecuencias, concluimos que en Puerto Rico hay una mayor prevalencia de Harpellales en larvas de Chironomidae en comparación con larvas de Culicidae. en_US
