Abstract
This thesis presents a dynamic analysis and a seismic evaluation of the Guayabal Dam located in Juana Díaz, Puerto Rico, in order to establish preliminary conclusions regarding the structural integrity of the dam in the event of a high intensity earthquake. For this purpose, a detailed 3D finite element model was generated with the program SAP2000 v11. The dam was analyzed using as input the original San Salvador earthquake of 1986 and two artificial accelerograms compatible with the UBC 97 and IBC 2006 design spectra that apply to the dam site. In addition, a design spectrum proposed for the municipality of Ponce by the company Dames & Moore was used. The behavior of the critical components of dam, namely the struts, buttresses and reinforced concrete slabs, was studied, to establish conclusions about the structural integrity of Guayabal dam. In addition, the optimum localization of seismic instrumentation was recommended based on the vibration modes and its respective modal participation factors. The results obtained were compared with a previous study and the differences found are explained. Overall conclusions about the structural integrity of Guayabal Dam were established. As a main conclusion, a portion of the reinforced concrete slab has less flexure ultimate capacity in comparison with the ultimate loads.
