Abstract
In this investigation 673 individuals of Petrusa were examined and the life cycle of the most common species, Petrusa epilepsis, was determined. In the genus review all species were re-described: P. epilepsis, P. decepta, P. pivota, P. torus and P. roquensis. Morphological characters, genital morphology, distribution, range of hosts and natural enemies, including fungi, parasitoids and predators, were included. Also, we described a new species found in Laguna Cartagena, Lajas, Puerto Rico. A dichotomic key was generated, including the new species, and a phylogenetic tree based on morphology for the species was built. According to the data collected, some species prefer high elevation, unlike others that are more common in low or medium elevations. We determined that the cycle of Petrusa epilepsis takes an average of 105 days, which is shorter than in other flatids. A detailed description was given of all stages and the duration of each one.
