Abstract
Research on the development of motor skills using the spectrum of teaching styles from Mosston and Ashwort (2008) focused primarily on which style best developed the motor skill investigated in this research project. In Puerto Rico there is no evidence of research that focuses on the develop of motor skills using one or more teaching styles of the spectrum. The purpose of this study was to analyze and identify the contributions in the development of the overhead throwing skill of students in two third grade classes, one taught with the Command teaching style and the other with the Guided Discovery Style. The sample consisted of 43 students. Each student was video-taped as they performed the overhead throw during the end of each of six class sessions. Two coders used the Developmental Sequence for Throwing Robertonand Langendorfer (1982) to focus on the actions of the foot, torso and arm action. Results showed that both styles contributed in the development of the contralateral step, arm movement backwards underneath the hip and maintaining the humerus lag when throwing. The environment was the main factor that provoked changes in students’ performance. Students taught with the Guided Discovery style experienced more positive changes in the movement development than the students taught with the Command style. They were able to explore different restrictions within the levels of freedom of movement of the foot, arm, humerus and forearm which eventually helped them learn to throw the ball farther.
