Abstract
This document contains work conducted within the basin of the Rio Grande de Añasco where the behavior and transportation of fecal coliform bacteria were determined by using the software tool ArcMap 9.1 and the Hydrological Simulation Program FORTRAN (HSPF). Using the transport mechanisms and the sources of the identified coliform fecal bacteria, the Index of Potentially Sensitive Areas was created. This index reflected that the most sensitive areas are related to the presence of faulty septic and sewage systems. In order to calibrate the fecal coliform bacteria model a sensitivity analysis was performed on the parameters that intervene in fecal coliform bacteria flux and transport. Analysis on the flux sensitivity index indicated that the most susceptible parameters for the hydrological calibration are INFIL, whose calibrated values varied between 0.0508 y 0.762 cm/hour, and AGWRC with a calibrate value of 0.985. WSQOP and SQOLIM-P were determined as the key factors in the analysis. WSQOP had a calibrated value of 97.8 cm/hour r and SQOLIM-P varied between 5.6x1010 y 1x1019 Kg/Ha. Various combination of loads percentage reductions using Best Management Practices were performed and it was found that it is necessary to integrate the optimal reductions in each watershed in order to meet the quality standards of Puerto Rico.
