Abstract

In this work we give a brief introduction to the algebra of Colombeau "G" , in which the product of distributions is defined, and we show some important relations in this algebra, such as the association " ≈ " . We consider a problem of Riemann for a system of Partial Differential Equations (P.D.E’s) that describes a linear elastic body with a constant density. The unknown functions are the velocity and the stress. Next we use some numerical schemes to find a numerical solution for this system. Since the system is nonconservative, we rewrite it in conservative form, and for that system find the explicit form of the weak solutions. The numerical results suggest that the solutions can be considered as a superposition of two traveling waves that are represented by discontinous functions. Since the system of P.D.E’s has nonlinear terms which induce distribution products, we use the association in "G" to give a meaning to the above mentioned terms. In this way, following the ideas of Colombeau, we find the explicit form of the solutions in"G" , which are not in the literature we have reviewed.
