dc.description.abstractWe present the first feasibility analysis of electricity generation using shoreline ocean waves in Puerto Rico. We produced an estimate of the amount of energy available in waves at the north shore of Puerto Rico; using data obtain from the Wave Information Study. Wave energy losses as they approach the shoreline are estimated using attenuation factors of 10, 20 and 30%, resulting in average wave power at shoreline between 11,000 and 14,000 Watts per meter of wave front. The shoreline technology selected to convert this energy into electricity was the Oscillating Water Column. Net Present Value is used to determine under which conditions the generation of electricity is cost effective. Projects with electricity selling price between 14 and 18 ¢/kWh, using a 7% annual indexation on selling price and 8% of return of investment, are economically feasible.en_US
dc.description.abstractEste trabajo presenta el primer análisis de viabilidad para generar electricidad usando las olas del mar en la costa en Puerto Rico. Se produjo un estimado de la cantidad de energía disponible en las olas de la Costa Norte de Puerto Rico, usando la data obtenida del “Wave Information Study”. Las pérdidas de energía de las olas a medida que estas llegan a la costa son estimadas usando factores de atenuación de 10, 20 y 30% resultando en una energía promedio es de entre 11,000 a 14,000 vatios por metro. La tecnología de olas en la costa seleccionada para convertir dicha energía en electricidad fue la Columna Oscilante de Agua. El Valor Neto Presente fue usado para determinar bajo qué condiciones la generación de electricidad es costo efectivo. Proyectos con precios de ventas de energía de entre 14 a 18 ¢/kWh, usando un 7% de indexación anual del precio de venta y 8% de retorno de la inversión, son económicamente viables.en_US
