dc.description.abstractGreat concern exists among the emergency management people and National Weather Service officers with regards to the accuracy of weather data for some regions of Puerto Rico, especially in the western area of the island. Accurate estimation of precipitation within this region is vital to improve weather forecast for the citizens. This thesis describes the most recent work performed on the radar (PR1) that serves as the first node of a short range X-band radar network. The network will improve the lower troposphere coverage and the resolution of the weather data in the western area of the Island. This research work includes implementation and operation of the internal calibration loop channel, external calibration procedures and replacement of several components of the data acquisition system of the PR1. In addition, validation of radar measurements were realized with Nexrad and a network of auxiliary sensors located in the proximity of the PR1 radar.en_US
dc.description.abstractGran preocupación existe entre el personal de manejo de emergencias y los oficiales del Servicio Nacional de Meteorología con respecto a la precisión de la data meteorológica de algunas regiones de Puerto Rico, especialmente en el área oeste de la isla. Una estimación precisa de precipitación en esta región es necesaria para mejorar las predicciones y proveer un informe del tiempo correcto a los ciudadanos. Esta tesis describe el trabajo final realizado en el radar (PR1) que opera como el primer nodo de la red de radares de rango corto y banda X. La red puede mejorar el área de cobertura baja y la resolución de la data climatológica en el área oeste. Esta investigación incluye la implementación y operación de un canal de calibración interna, procedimientos de calibración externa y el reemplazo de algunos componentes del sistema de adquisición de datos. Adicional, la validación de las medidas del radar fue comparada con Nexrad y una red de sensores auxiliares localizados en la cercanía del radar PR1.en_US
