Magical sexualities: Witchcraft in film and television

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to analyze varied representations of the figure of the witch through television series and the implication these representations have within the field of feminist studies. For this investigation, the figure of the witch was traced historically and with regards to the origins of cinematic adaptations concerning witches. The objective of the utilization of the figure of the witch was dissected to determine the goals in choosing this particular figure to represent women within different media. The focus of this thesis is primarily on recent media portrayals of witches as mature women, mothers, and adolescents. Witches have been symbols of both oppression and liberation and this work aims to determine if, with regards to women, there is still a need for adequate representation within popular culture.

El propósito de esta investigación es analizar representaciones variadas de la figura de la bruja a través de series de televisión y la implicación que estas representaciones tienen dentro del campo de los estudios feministas. Para esta investigación, se trazó la figura de la bruja históricamente y con respecto a los orígenes de las adaptaciones cinematográficas relacionadas con las brujas. El objetivo de la utilización de la figura de la bruja se diseccionó para determinar la intención en la elección de esta figura en particular para representar a las mujeres en diferentes medios. El enfoque de esta tesis se centra principalmente en representaciones recientes de brujas en los medios como mujeres maduras, madres y adolescentes. Las brujas han sido símbolos tanto de la opresión como de la liberación y este trabajo tiene como objetivo determinar si, con respecto a las mujeres, todavía existe la necesidad de una representación adecuada dentro de la cultura popular.
