Languagelessness & bicultural ambivalence in Puerto Rico

Abstract

This investigation used two focus group interviews and discourse analysis to determine if Puerto Ricans are perceived as languageless and biculturally ambivalent. It aimed to identify how these ideologies are demonstrated and perpetuated. Twelve students from the University of Puerto Rico, Mayagüez campus (UPRM) were purposely selected to include Puerto Rican and non-Puerto Rican individuals. Published discourse was selected to capture the perception of the diaspora and other non-island-based individuals. The data was analyzed using a building tasks of language model. The participants demonstrated linguistic insecurity, concern over belonging and being enough, and needing affirmation of their own identities. However, it also became evident that the current generation appears more accepting towards variations in Puerto Rican language use and culture. The participants perpetuated these ideologies mostly through cultural gatekeeping, and through expressing the beliefs that some languages are better than others and that Puerto Rican-ness can be measured.

Esta investigación utilizó dos entrevistas de grupos focales y análisis de discurso para determinar si los puertorriqueños son percibidos como faltos de lenguaje y biculturalmente ambivalentes. Su objetivo era identificar cómo se demuestran y perpetúan estas ideologías. Doce estudiantes de la Universidad de PR, campus de Mayagüez (UPRM) fueron seleccionados intencionalmente para incluir puertorriqueños y no puertorriqueños. Se seleccionaron publicaciones para capturar la percepción de la diáspora e individuos no insulares. Los datos se analizaron utilizando un modelo de construcción de lenguaje. Los participantes demostraron inseguridad lingüística y preocupación por pertenecer, ser suficientes y afirmar sus identidades. Sin embargo, también se observó que la generación actual parece ser más receptiva a las variaciones en el lenguaje y la cultura puertorriqueña. Los participantes perpetuaron las ideologías principalmente a través del control cultural, y de las creencias de que algunos idiomas son mejores que otros y que la puertorriqueñidad se puede medir.
