Abstract
Due to the latent risk that exists in seismically active areas such as Puerto Rico, which is located on the border between the North American and Caribbean plates, it is important to be aware of the performance of the most susceptible structures on the island in case of a major seismic event. This project is focused on non-linear analysis under seismic loads of a type of structure considered common on the island. For this, two buildings for public residential use were selected, both of two located in the city of Mayagüez and designed in 1962. This analysis is representative for at least 39 three-story buildings and 27 two-story buildings that house an estimated population of 576 families, all located in the Rafael Hernández public housing complex. Two both structures were analyzed under the maximum seismic demand expected for the south-west area of Puerto Rico through a design response spectrum that was proposed based on the estimated characteristics of the existing faults in the region. Considering changes in seismic design standards from the date these structures were designed to the present, it would be expected that both buildings will not meet current seismic design requirements, especially at the level of reinforcement detail, therefore, the focus of this study was not based on verifying the compliance of the structures with the current design codes, but verifying if they would collapse under the action of an earthquake that generates the maximum intensity expected in the south-west area of Puerto Rico. For this purpose, the Capacity Spectrum and non-linear dynamic analysis methods were used and in both cases the results indicated that the buildings analyzed would collapse under the maximum expected seismic demand. As a solution to prevent the collapse of both buildings, a rehabilitation method was proposed, consisting of “bracings ” of steel in an inverted V shape in both directions.
