Micro-scale crack propagation using the eXtendend finite element method (XFEM)

Crack propagation is a probably one of the most important subjects when it comes to structural failure. Microstructural cracks are crucial because they could lead to catastrophic failure. There has been some experimental work but very little promising computational models. We proposed a computational model based on the XFEM in ABAQUS, which is manipulated using a Python Script, to analyzing crack propagation at the microscale. The model takes into account the effects of microscale grain geometries and their orientations. The technique uses real microstructure images and random microstructural material properties. When compared with experimental data, the computational model produced very good results. The case studies show that the microcrack will follow regions of low energy.
