Incidencia, severidad y viabilidad de la roya de la hoja del cafeto (Hemileia vastatrix Berk. et Br.) en la zona cafetalera de Puerto Rico

Abstract

La roya de la hoja del cafeto (Hemileia vastatrix Berk. et Br.) es la enfermedad más limitante en la producción mundial de Coffea arabica. Monitorear el estatus y progreso de la enfermedad es la herramienta más eficaz para determinar las medidas de manejo. La estrategia de control más efectiva de esta enfermedad es el uso de cultivares resistentes. Los objetivos de esta investigación fueron ejecutar un plan de muestreo de incidencia y severidad de la enfermedad en la zona cafetalera de la isla, realizar una caracterización fenotípica de las muestras de roya presentes y evaluar técnicas de criopreservación de uredosporas para facilitar evaluaciones futuras de la enfermedad. Los muestreos se realizaron en cinco fincas distribuidas en el centro oeste cafetalero, en 12 lotes homogéneos por tres ocasiones durante la cosecha 2020-2021. Ninguno de los lotes recibió la aplicación de ningún fungicida, solo fertilizantes. El primer muestreo se realizó en los meses de julio-agosto durante el llenado de fruto, el segundo postcosecha en diciembre durante el desarrollo de raíces y el último en los meses de marzo-abril durante la florecida de la próxima cosecha. Se realizó utilizando el método de muestreo en forma de “T” modificado, seleccionando cinco arbustos de cafetos del borde y cinco del centro con un total de 120 observaciones por lote, con el método de conteo y la utilización de diagramas de clases. El 67% de los lotes de café estaban sembrados de variedades resistentes a la roya de la hoja del cafeto, las cuales presentaron una incidencia inicial promedio de 0.7%, luego con un máximo de 26% y finalmente de 9% de incidencia generando una área bajo la curva de progreso de la enfermedad de 3752 AUDPC (Area Under Disease Progress Curve), con una severidad promedio máximo de 0.8% mayormente representada por clorosis. El restante 33% de los lotes estaban sembrados de variedades susceptibles a la roya del café, los cuales presentaron una incidencia inicial promedio de 15%, luego con un máximo de 49% y finalmente de 35% de incidencia generando un área bajo la curva de progreso de la enfermedad de 8848 AUDPC, con una severidad promedio mínimo de 3% a un máximo de 9% de severidad representada mayormente por lesiones con abundantes uredosporas. La sombra permanente, la altitud, el estrato del cafeto y la posición de este en el lote tuvieron efectos aumentando la incidencia y severidad de la roya de la hoja del cafeto. Se compararon dos técnicas para la toma de incidencia en un lote, por conteo de hojas totales y hojas enfermas versus la utilización de un diagrama de clases de la enfermedad en un arbusto y se encontró que tienen una buena correlación (0.7-0.8 R2) cuando la incidencia de la enfermedad es baja, pero a medida que la severidad aumenta esta correlación disminuye (0.4R2). Se evaluó la incidencia de otras plagas y enfermedades de importancia en el cultivo del cafeto y se encontró que el minador del café, Leucoptera coffeella, fue la plaga con mayor incidencia en ambas variedades. Se evaluaron tres técnicas de criopreservación de uredosporas: (1) seco, (2) suspensión e (3) in situ, a cuatro temperaturas: (1) temperatura ambiente 24±5ºC, (2) nevera 4±2ºC, (3)congelador -20±2ºC y (4) ultra-congelador -70±2ºC. Los tratamientos que mantuvieron porcentajes de germinación viables por encima del 10% de germinación fueron las técnicas de almacenamiento en seco e in situ hasta los seis meses de almacenamiento, a temperaturas ambiente y en nevera. Luego de los seis meses de almacenamiento todos los tratamientos estuvieron por debajo del 10% de viabilidad necesario para inoculación. Se describió la situación actual de la enfermedad de la roya del café en variedades susceptibles y resistentes en la zona centro oeste cafetalera de la isla, y la técnica más eficiente de almacenamiento de uredosporas de la roya de la hoja del cafeto a corto plazo.

Coffee leaf rust (Hemileia vastatrix Berk. et Br.) is the most limiting disease in the world production of Coffea arabica. Monitoring the status and progress of the disease is the most effective tool for determining management measures. The most effective control strategy for this disease is the use of resistant cultivars. The objectives of this research were to carry out a sampling plan for the incidence and severity of the disease in the coffee-growing area of the island, carry out a phenotypic characterization of the rust samples present, and evaluate uredospore cryopreservation techniques to facilitate future evaluations of the disease. Sampling was carried out on five farms distributed in the coffee-growing center-west in 12 homogeneous lots on three occasions during the 2020-2021 harvest. None of the lots received the application of any fungicide, only fertilizers. The first sampling was carried out in July-August during fruit filling, the second postharvest in December during roots development, and the last in the months of March-April during the flowering of the next harvest. It was carried out using the modified "T" shaped sampling method, selecting five coffee trees from the edge and five from the center with 120 observations per lot, with the counting method and the use of class diagrams. The 67% of the coffee lots were planted with varieties resistant to coffee leaf rust, which presented an initial average incidence of 0.7%, then with a maximum of 26% and finally of 9% incidence, generating an area under disease progress curve of 3752 AUDPC (Area Under Disease Progress Curve), with a maximum average severity of 0.8%, represented mainly by chlorosis. The remaining 33% of the lots were planted with varieties susceptible to coffee leaf rust, which presented an initial average incidence of 15%, then with a maximum of 49% and finally 35% incidence, generating an area under disease progress curve of 8848 AUDPC, with a minimum average severity of 3% to a maximum of 9% severity represented mainly by lesions with abundant uredospores. The permanent shade, the altitude, the coffee tree stratum and its position in the lot had effects increasing the incidence and severity of coffee leaf rust. Two techniques for taking incidence in a lot were compared by counting whole leaves and diseased leaves versus using a class diagram of the disease in a tree. It was found that they have a reasonable correlation (0.7-0.8 R2) when the incidence of the disease is low, but as the severity increases, this correlation decreases (0.4R2). The incidence of other important pests and diseases in coffee cultivation was evaluated. It was found that the coffee leaf miner, Leucoptera coffeella, was the pest with the highest incidence in both varieties. Three uredospore cryopreservation techniques were evaluated: (1) dry, (2) suspension and (3) in situ, at four temperatures: (1) room temperature 24±5ºC, (2) refrigerator 4±2ºC, (3) freezer -20±2ºC and (4) ultra-freezer -70±2ºC. The treatments that maintained viable germination percentages above 10% were dry and in situ storage techniques for up to six months of storage, at ambient temperatures and in the refrigerator. After six months of storage, all treatments were below the 10% viability necessary for inoculation. The current situation of the coffee rust disease in susceptible and resistant varieties in the west-central coffee zone of the island was described, as well as the most efficient short-term storage technique for coffee rust uredospores.
