Abstract
A standoff detection scheme for a highly energetic material (HEM) and other threat chemicals deposited on substrates as contamination residues using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) is described. The HEM used as target analyte in this work was the well-known nitroaliphatic nitrate ester pentaerythritol tetranitrate (PETN). The experimental protocol consisted of evaluating active mode infrared (IR) spectroscopy standoff sensing at a distance of 1 m with variations in three parameters of the detection system. The first variable considered was the angular dependence of the incidence IR beam with respect to the target containing analyte contamination residues. Angles studied were: 0° (normal incidence) to 60° with detector placed at the same angle as the incidence angle (symmetric configuration). The second variable was the substrate type on which the target material was deposited. Three substrates were used: polished aluminum (Al), roughened Al, and anodized Al. The third variable studied was the analyte surface concentration on the substrates: from 10 to 200 μg/cm2 . Calibration models were based on the use of a multivariate analysis routine: partial least squares regression analysis. This algorithm was used to evaluate the effect of the angular dependence, substrate type and surface concentration on the detection limits of PETN deposited on the Al substrates.
