dc.description.abstractThe objective of the investigation is to obtain information for the establishment of a vermicompost system for the coffee processing in Puerto Rico. A complete randomized block design was used with four treatments for a period of 17 weeks. The densities studied were 0, 3, 5 and 7 kg of worms (Eisenia foetida) per cubic meter of coffee pulp. There was no significant difference in the amount of vermicompost produced. The chemical analysis carried out to the substrates established that they had 4% of N, 1% of P and 10% of K. There was no considerable difference between the chemical analysis of the vermicompost and the traditional compost. The mortality rate of the treatments was from 85 to 95% at harvest time and no reproduction was observed. More research is needed about the production of vermicompost with coffee pulp in the Island.en_US
dc.description.abstractEl objetivo de la investigación es obtener información para el establecimiento del sistema de vermicomposta en el beneficiado de café en Puerto Rico. Se realizó un diseño en bloques completamente al azar con cuatro tratamientos por un periodo de 17 semanas. Las densidades utilizadas fueron 0, 3, 5 y 7 kg de lombriz (Eisenia foetida) por metro cúbico de pulpa de café. No hubo diferencia significativa en la cantidad de vermicomposta producida. El análisis químico realizado a los sustratos establece que tienen un 4% de N, 1% de P y 10% de K. No se encontró una diferencia relevante entre el análisis químico de la vermicomposta y la composta tradicional. El porcentaje de mortandad en los tratamientos fue de 85 a 95% al momento de la cosecha y no se observó reproducción. Es necesario realizar mayor investigación acerca de la producción de vermicomposta con pulpa de café en la Isla.en_US
